Surah Al-‘An’am, Chapter 6, Introduction

This Surah is the sixty-ninth Surah that was revealed to the Prophet (S) in Mecca. As the Traditions of Ahlul-Bayt (as) indicate, all the verses of this Surah were revealed at the same time.
Similar to other Meccan Suras, the basic aim of this Surah is inviting people to the triple principals of unity of Allah, Prophecy, and Resurrection, but most of all, it emphasizes on monotheism and opposing paganism and idolatry.

Paying attention carefully to the contents of the verses of this Surah can remove the soul of hypocrisy and disperse from among Muslims, and cause the ears to be hearing, the eyes to be clear-sighted, and the hearts (minds) to be knowledgeable.

Therefore our stardate is shown on moon in relationship to earth. Kor’an 36:40 [and] neither may the sun overtake the moon, nor can the night usurp the time of day, since all of them float through space [in accordance with Our laws].
About the virtue of this Surah, in the Islamic traditions, it is cited that when this Surah was revealed, seventy thousand angels were taking after it. And that every believer who recites it, (because of its light, his soul and self may be satiated from the spring of monotheism and) all those angels will ask forgiveness for that person. 1

Also, ‘Ayyashi himself has narrated from ‘Abi-Basir that Imam Sadiq (as) said: “Surah Al-‘An’am was revealed at the same time while seventy thousand angels were respectfully accompanying it, because there has mentioned the name of Allah in seventy occurrences of it. If people knew how much virtue there lies in its recitation, they would never leave it out.”

Then Imam (as) continued saying: “Whoever is in want of a requirement from Allah and he desires it to be granted, he should establish four units (rak’at) of prayer consisting of At-Fatihat-ul-Kitab and Surah Al-‘An’am. Then when he finishes the recitation of the Surah, he should recite the following supplication:

O’ The Generous! O’ The Generous! O’ The Generous!
O’ The Great! O’ The Great O’ The Great!
O’ Greater than any great!
O’ The Hearer of supplications!
O’ He Whom nights and days do not change!
Blessing and peace be upon Muhammad and his descendents!
May You have mercy upon my weakness, my poverty, my neediness, and my wretchedness!
O’ He Who had mercy upon Jacob, the elder, while He returned Yusef, his dear one, to him!
O’ He Who had mercy on Job after his long trial (of affliction)!
O’ He Who had mercy upon Muhammad and Who sheltered him, the orphan!
And Who assisted him against tyrants of Quraysh and their false deities, and gave him authority upon them!
O’ Helper! O’ Helper! O’ Helper!

“By Allah! If you recite this supplication and ask Allah for your whole needs, He will bestow (them to) you.” 2

Ali-ibn-‘Ibrahim has narrated from Hadrat Rida (as), the eighth Imam, who said

“Surah Al-‘An’am was sent down at the same time and seventy thousand angels accompanied it with the sound of glorification, exaltation and proclamation of His greatness. Whoever recites this Surah, angels will give glory (unto Allah) for him until the Resurrection Day.” 3

“American Qur’an” is not a Koran in the sacred sense. As an English interpretation, and a non-academic one at that, it is not subject to the same rules of ritual purity that practicing Muslims would extend to an Arabic iteration. Instead, it’s a masterful reminder that America and Islam are, as ideas and as histories, deeply, painfully interlinked.

New York, Mar 5 (PTI) Scientists have successfully stored a computer operating system, a short movie along with other data in DNA, an advance that may usher the next generation of ultra-compact, biological storage devices which will last hundreds of thousands of years. In a new study, researchers from Columbia University and the New York Genome Centre (NYGC) in the US showed that an algorithm designed for streaming video on a cellphone can unlock DNAs nearly full storage potential by squeezing more information into its four base nucleotides. They also showed that the technology is extremely reliable. DNA is an ideal storage medium because it is ultra-compact and can last hundreds of thousands of years if kept in a cool, dry place, as demonstrated by the recent recovery of DNA from the bones of a 430,000-year-old human ancestor found in a cave in Spain. "DNA wont degrade over time like cassette tapes and CDs, and it wont become obsolete - if it does, we have bigger problems," said Yaniv Erlich from Columbia University. Researchers chose six files to encode, or write, into DNA: a full computer operating system, an 1895 French film, "Arrival of a train at La Ciotat," a 50 USD Amazon gift card, a computer virus, a Pioneer plaque and a 1948 study by information theorist Claude Shannon. They compressed the files into a master file, and then split the data into short strings of binary code made up of ones and zeros. Using an erasure-correcting algorithm called fountain codes, they randomly packaged the strings into so-called droplets, and mapped the ones and zeros in each droplet to the four nucleotide bases in DNA: A, G, C and T. The algorithm deleted letter combinations known to create errors and added a barcode to each droplet to help reassemble the files later. The researchers showed that their coding strategy packs 215 petabytes of data on a single gram of DNA, which according to Erlich was the highest-density data-storage device ever created. "We believe this is the highest-density data-storage device ever created," said Erlich. The study was published in the journal Science.

Idris ibn Yard ibn Mahla’il‘ (Arabic: إدريس‎‎) is an ancient prophet mentioned in the Qur’an. He is considered to be the second prophet in Islam after Adam. He is described in the Qur’an as “trustworthy” and “patient” and the Qur’an also says that he was “exalted to a high station”, Because of this and other parallels, traditionally Idris has been identified with the Biblical Enoch, and therefore Islamic tradition usually places Idris in the early Generations of Adam, and considers him one of the oldest prophets mentioned in the Qur’an, placing him sometime between Adam and Noah. Idris’ unique status inspired many future traditions and stories surrounding him in Islamic lore. Islamic literature narrates that Idris was made prophet at around 40, which parallels the age when Muhammad (saw) began to prophesy, and lived during a time when people had begun to worship fire. Exegesis embellishes upon the lifetime of Idris, and states that the prophet divided his time into two. For three days of the week, Idris would preach to his people and four days he would devote solely to the worship of God. Many early commentators, such as Tabari, credited Idris with possessing great wisdom and knowledge. Exegesis narrates that Idris was among “the first men to use the pen as well as being one of the first men to observe the movement of the stars and set out scientific weights and measures.” These attributes remain consistent with the identification of Enoch with Idris, as these attributes make it clear that Idris would have most probably lived during the Generations of Adam, the same era during which Enoch lived. Ibn Arabi described Idris as the “prophet of the philosophers” and a number of works were attributed to him. Some scholars wrote commentaries on these supposed works, all while Idris was also credited with several inventions, including the art of making garments. The commentator Ibn Ishaq narrated that he was the first man to write with a pen and that he was born when Adam still had 308 years of his life to live. In his commentary on the Quranic verses 19:56-57, the commentator Ibn Kathir narrated “During the Night Journey, the Prophet passed by him in fourth heaven. In a hadith, Ibn Abbas asked Ka’b what was meant by the part of the verse which says, ”And We raised him to a high station.” Ka’b explained: Allah revealed to Idris: ‘I would raise for you every day the same amount of the deeds of all Adam’s children’ – perhaps meaning of his time only. So Idris wanted to increase his deeds and devotion. A friend of his from the angels visited and Idris said to him: ‘Allah has revealed to me such and such, so could you please speak to the angel of death, so I could increase my deeds.’ The angel carried him on his wings and went up into the heavens. When they reached the fourth heaven, they met the angel of death, who was descending down towards earth. The angel spoke to him, about what Idris had spoken to him before. The angel of death said: ‘But where is Idris?’ He replied, ‘He is upon my back.’ The angel of death said: ‘How astonishing! I was sent and told to seize his soul in the fourth heaven. I kept thinking how I could seize it in the fourth heaven when he was on the earth?’ Then he took his soul out of his body, and that is what is meant by the verse: ‘And We raised him to a high station.’ Early accounts of Idris’ life attributed “thirty portions of revealed scripture” to him. Therefore, Idris was understood by many early commentators to be both a prophet as well as a messenger. Several modern commentators have linked this sentiment with Biblical apocrypha such as the Book of Enoch and the Second Book of Enoch. According to hadith, narrated by Malik ibn Anas and found in Sahih Muslim, it is said that on Muhammad (saw)’s Night Journey, he encountered Idris in the fourth heaven. The traditions that have developed around the figure of Idris have given him the scope of a prophet as well as a philosopher and mystic, and many later Muslim mystics, or Sufis, including Ruzbihan Baqli and Ibn Arabi, also mentioned having encountered Idris in their spiritual visions.
